2/2 The Mapmakers Lines are Crooked (NEW WORKS SERIES)
This Tuesday, FEBRUARY 2nd, we will be reading a play in our monthly NEW WORKS SERIES: THE MAPMAKERS LINES ARE CROOKED by Robert Gardner. This reading will kick off the first of our plays and screenplays by Black Playwrights in honor of Black History Month.
A novel THE MAP MAKERS written during African independence was published without the final chapter. This book was a bestseller for decades and became a seminal work for writers and intellectuals around the world. Many writers have tried to come up with an ending. No one has been successful. Elaine Masters, a successful, African-British, film director haunted by the book has decided to make a movie and wrestle with the ending through cinema. She managed to get “some” money. Head-strong and willful, she managed to raise “some” money and has moved to Africa with a Producer and a crew and has begun shooting the film. The film director finds herself battling finance, producers, the writers family, the spirit of the dead writer…and she has a secret: She has no ending.
