3/1 Venus

This Tuesday, MARCH 1st, we will be kicking off Women Playwrights Month with a reading VENUS by Suzan-Lori Parks.

The character of VENUS fictionally expands upon the real life of Sarah “Saartjie” Baartman who was “the most celebrated of several women from the Khoisan people of South Africa” who were taken from their homeland and exhibited as curiosities or freaks because their physiques were unusual to Europeans of that time. On display, Baartman was titillatingly billed as “The Venus-Hottentot.” During her exhibition throughout England, she became the subject of a trial to determine if she was performing of her own free will. The controversial verdict permitted her to continue to be exhibited in France, where she was studied by a celebrated French scientist. The Baron Docteur takes interest in Saartjie, who buys her from the Mother-Showman and takes her with him to Paris as his mistress. However, the Baron Docteur has plans to study her “steatopygia” after her death. Winner of 2 Obie Awards, the play also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2002 — the first ever awarded to an African-American female playwright.
